The future of climate change

The future of climate change Adults have always told us to look after our future, but what future have they left us? We’ve been told while we grow up that we need to look after our planet, plant more trees, recycle, be aware of our surroundings and take care of our animals. However, who is going to tell the adults that trees can no longer save us? It appears that planting even a trillion trees can’t save us. We need to start now in order to save our future.

As I said before, adults have always told us this is our future, but what they fail to mention is that this is the future they have left us. While some of our Prime Ministers and Presidents are relaxing in Hawaii or concerned more about how much money they’re earning, a seventeen-year-old is trying to convince us to do more for our planet and save our future. They still have time to save us, but they choose not to.

In the midst of the Australia fires, the Prime Minister of Australia (Scott Morrison) decided to go on holiday to Hawaii, while many young people donated and fundraised for the fires/firefighters. We need to realise we aren’t the only ones on this planet. During the Australian fires, which raged on for nearly 6 months, more than 1 billion animals perished in the fires, making some animals on the verge of extinction. For example, the Northern Corroboree frog which has now been considered endangered due to the fires destroying their habitats and the fires causing droughts. Many other animals are also experiencing the same things as the Northern Corroboree frog. However, this is also happening to animals all over the world.

Since humans arrived on Earth, the extinction of roughly 322 species of animals has happened. There are many ways we can help to solve this problem, such as recycling, reducing plastic waste, and educating family, friends and possibly even strangers. By educating and teaching people different ways of saving our environment and animals, we can save the world. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to help save the world, it just takes time and help. Committed and motivated people are the reason we're still alive.

Every little step to our future counts, even if it means picking up a piece of rubbish or cutting down your showers. Each day that goes by without any change, each day an animal is closer to extinction, or humans closer to extinction.

Opinion piece

My own definition of an opinion piece: I think that an opinion piece means that you have your own opinion on something using correct facts, information, and news to build your piece. You're meant to be informing the reader what your opinion is, without trying to bully them into having the same opinion. I agree with both parties, they both have assured us that if the corona virus does arrive in NZ, we shouldn't worry because they have things set in place so that it doesn't spread far. However, I agree with labour that we shouldn't be racist towards the Chinese/Asian community because it isn't their fault for this disease, and it doesn't help anyone or anything if we're being racist towards people it's not helping us find a cure or removing the risk of infection. And that we should stay calm for now considering there is no reported cases in NZ. https://www.stuff.co.nz/opinion/119385975/coronavirus-a-matter-of-when-not-if

HUHA visit

Huha visit
On Wednesday the 7th August the group involved with the Anxiety project visited HUHA, along with 4 other students who think they have anxiety. When visiting we met 4 puppies, sadly I don't think we are able to share the names or pictures of the puppies so we won't be able to share that information.

We got to play with two of those puppies that were brother and sister, and while we were playing them we observed that the puppies were a distraction so they weren't aware of what was going on. They also made our students happier. We think this was a successful visit, and we hope to carry this on. Image result for black labradors

Tupaia's history in NZ

Tupaia, a polynesian who used the stars to navigate his journey, assisted Captain Cook in their voyage to New Zealand and many other countries. Tupaia was skilled in many ways such as being an artist, tattooist, and even fluent in many Pasifika languages, and also learnt English while travelling on the Endeavour. Tupaia has not been credited for his help in finding New Zealand, and other countries with Captain Cook. Learning about Tupaia is a very important key part in Nz's history.Image result for nz

The anxiety project

The anxiety project

Anxiety, how animals reduce it, and how our action plan supports people with it.This report will state facts about how animals can help decrease anxiety in people, and symptoms and causes of anxiety. We have formed this project to create equity for all people with anxiety.

These are some common symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety can cause panic attacks, chest pain, shortness of breath, and sweating uncontrollably. Anxiety can happen at any time of the day, but it mostly occurs at night because it’s just you alone and your thoughts. Many children can also succumb to anxiety at school due to stress of test anxiety, homework problems, and work that’s too hard. There are many different symptoms, so this doesn’t cover every single symptom.

Animals can benefit people in many ways, especially with their mental health. For example animals release a hormone in people called oxytocin which is a stress reducing hormone, this decreases production of the stress hormone cortisol. Statistics can also support this, 74% of pet owners reported that their animals improved their mental health, and 75% of pet owners reported a friends/family members mental health has improved from pet ownership. Having a pet can also improve your physical health by taking them on walks or playing with them, which if you count that as an exercise, it’ll release a hormone in your body, that can calm anxiety and lift your mood.

To assist students at Otaki college my group has decided to plan a visit to Huha. Huha is an animal shelter that creates a safe haven for animals in need. To see the effects animals have on students with anxiety, we will be bringing a group of students from Oc,including us to visit huha. To make sure this is a pleasant experience for all of us our student councilor is making sure the group of students are comfortable with participating in this project.

If this creates a positive effect on both students and animals, we will try to continue this on to a school event.
